The Naked Land is a book that centres on the dreams,hopes, expectations,struggles,disappoinments and plight of the people of the Niger Delta region of nigeria. The socio-economic long abandonment,enviromental pollution from oil spillage and gas flares which only contributed to the impoverishment of the people,despite the 'rivers of wealth that is beneath their feet',the myriads of unheeded calls and pleas of the people, led the old soldier-Mudiagan Oviri and others to engage in militancy in other to force the unrepenting,and uncaring government to correct the injustice done to the people of the land. It digs deep into the lives of the Oviri family,as a case study of the entire Niger Delta people. Mudiagan Oviri and his nephews-Efe and Igho bacame the arrow-heads of the movement,facing threats of arrests,death,and self imposed exile, even on their own soil. It also reveals that traitors in the land are also making things worse for the people despite the glaring socio-economic blackouts wrought on the people of the land by several governments for decades. The government soon realises her economic injustice towards the people of the region is what led to the birth of the hydra headed militant groups that are hell-bent on sabotaging government and private oil properties,and kidnapping key personalities,and decides to correct the injustice. The third part of the book- A Ray Of Hope,essentially revolves around a repentant and remorseful government, that finally offered amnesty to the NDRF, and a much more Niger Delta people friendly policies and an imminent turn around of the provocative actions of the NDRF, with its members beginning to lay down their arms. In a nutshell,the book dicusses the plight,disappointments,hopes and expectations of the people, and essentially the on-going healing of the Niger Delta by the present dispensation. |
